Full details revealed regarding Corey Perry's settlement with Blackhawks

The NHL and the NHLPA came to a resolution and settlement on Corey Perry's contract termination from the Chicago Blackhawks earlier this season. While the exact details have not been released, a financial resolution was reached, no grievances were filed, and the Blackhawks were ultimately awarded a salary cap charge for this season.

General manager, Kyle Davidson, and the Blackhawks organization voided and terminated Perry's contract back in November of 2023. The exact verbiage was that he "engaged in conduct that is unacceptable and in violation of both the terms of his standard players' contract and the Blackhawks' internal policies intended to promote professional and safe work environments.»

Upon being released, he had to meet with commissioner Gary Bettman before he was allowed back into the pool. He met with Bettman in January, he okayed his return, and the Edmonton Oilers signed the veteran to a 1.1 million dollar contract for the remainder of the season with a cap hit of 775,000 on the 22nd of January.

As for the Blackhawks, who originally signed him to a one year deal worth 4 million dollars in the summer, they were charged 3.01 million of the original contract that he signed, including the 1.02 million while he was with the team. Meaning they were assessed a 1.99 million cap charge for the period of termination, according to PuckPedia.


Elliotte Friedman also noted that:

"While exact details of the settlement are unknown, the key in this case is it cannot be used as precedent in any future termination conversations. The players' association wanted to make sure guaranteed contracts will be protected as much as is possible."

Fortunately for the rebuilding club, that won't affect them all too much as they still carry a projected cap space of 8.511 million for the rest of the season. They will also enter the summer with just under 40 million dollars in cap space, a slew of UFAs and RFAs to deal with, and potentially another first overall pick.

As for Perry, he has 5 goals and 7 points in 20 games since joining to Oilers to go along with his 23 PIMs and 15 hits while averaging 12:41 TOI. Edmonton is also 12-6-2 since his arrival and gearing up for a lengthy playoff run.
