Matthew Knies says he "blacked out" after last night's OT winner
Matthew Knies says he "blacked out" after having scored the biggest goal of his NHL career in overtime of Game 5.
Jake McCabe opened the scoring early in the first period for the Leafs in a must-win game and after the Bruins tied it later in the first, fans had to wait until 2:26 into overtime before another goal was scored.Leafs fans went home happier than Bruins fans as Matthew Knies pounced on a rebound from a John Tavares drive to the net that extended the series to at least game six.
Following the game, Knies was asked how he felt scoring the biggest goal of his young career, to which he was more excited for his teammates than himself.
"You black out a little bit," Knies admitted. "I was just so excited and so happy. I think what brought me more joy was to see the faces of my teammates and how much they wanted to keep playing and keep moving on."
While Knies was elated that he could be a factor and help the team, McCabe felt that Knies was due to get a fortunate bounce.
"All series long he's been a force, I feel like, to be reckoned with, and I was telling him he's the strongest guy on the ice. He's 21 years old and he's an absolute horse out there. Does a lot of great work for us on the forecheck and he's been starting to kill penalties and to see him to get rewarded there with the G-Dub, it's fitting for a guy that's been working his tail off all series."
Following an emotional win in Game 5, Knies, McCabe and the Leafs will look to force a Game 7 and snap their playoff home losing streak on Thursday night.
