Well, it certainly didn't take long for Joe Thornton to decide what the next steps are for him following his retirement announcement. In fact, within only a matter of days, Thornton has already taken on a new position within the hockey sphere - albeit on the international stage.

As confirmed by Sportsnet, Thornton, along with Brad Pascall, has been named co-general managers for Team Canada for the upcoming 2023 Spengler Cup.

This past week, Thornton had announced his retirement in a special "tarps off" video, as many had been bombarding him with questions surrounding his playing status. Thornton had not played since the 2020-21 season, leading to much speculation that he had indeed stepped away, though nothing had been made official until late last week.

Thornton is no stranger to international competition, as he has an Olympic gold medal and two World Cup gold medals. He has also played a few seasons with Davos HC in the Swiss-A league.

Congrats to Thornton on this huge honour. Here's hoping he can secure gold once again, albeit as an executive this time around.
