Marner being robbed of a goal in Stockholm pales in comparison to the botched no goal call in Anaheim

The Toronto Maple Leafs came back to beat the Detroit Red Wings across the pond in Stockholm, Sweden yesterday afternoon, skating away with a 3-2 win, but the game was not decided without its fair share of controversy. There were a couple of sketchy penalty calls on either side in this one, but it was the controversial no goal call against Mitch Marner in the 2nd period that really left a sour taste in the mouths of Leafs Nation.

Marner had received a pass from below the goal line with approximately 7:30 remaining in the 2nd period, which he appeared to fire past Red Wings goaltender Alex Lyon, but an off-balance Jake Walman had knocked the net off, suffering an injury on the play. The call should have been an easy one for the officials to make, but the call on the ice was no goal and the review needed to be conclusive in order for the call to be overturned. After a few minutes, the decision came back to uphold the no goal call, much to the chagrin of Marner and the Leafs' bench, as the puck had certainly crossed the line inside of where the post would have been had the net not been dislodged.


Meanwhile, back across the pond in North America, the Anaheim were having similar issues with the officials, having a controversial no goal call upheld in their game against the Florida Panthers, despite some pretty damning evidence.



This one might actually be worse than the no goal call against Marner. You can clearly see the pad of Anthony Stolarz well behind the goal line, with the puck flipped up on its axis, sliding along the pad and out when it reaches the toe-curve.

Maybe the solution here is to have more good goal calls on the ice by the officials. Then, if the replay review comes back as inconclusive, there's not enough there to overturn a goal. I mean, if the goal is to make the game more exciting for fans, isn't that a better idea?
